Liverpool Tattoo Museum

Apparently there's a tattoo museum in Liverpool now.  Rather, it's online but dedicated to the tattooing history of Liverpool.

Read my history section above, on my blog, and you will learn about my family's dominant role in Liverpool tattooing history.

Southport Tattoo Museum

I have just learned of a new tattoo museum.  Their website seems to offer little information about the museum, beyond offering repro postcards for sale.  It will be interesting to see how the project develops over time.

Liverpool's Tattooing Family History

I have updated the history page here, with some extra pictures.  When a city has seen four generations of tattoo artists in one family there is bound to be a fair bit of anecdotal aural history around.  I want to collect this before it slides away.  So if you have any memorabilia or anecdotes about Jack The Tattooist, Sailor Jack or Sailor Bill, let me know.

What's New

I've just bought a new autoclave. I've also had some new tattoo frames hand-made to my own specifications.

Monday saw me in Chester, shopping. Bought Planet of the Apes: The Complete TV Series plus some winter-weight walking gear.  I've taken up walking.  So far I've lost a stone in weight.

Bought some Nazareth and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and I've been enjoying some Dr Who short stories and Marvel's The Human Torch.  Enjoyed watching Into the West , F/X, and the Fantastic Four cartoons.

And it's official:  I cook the best roast potatoes in our house.

There's a rumour going round that I've combined my studio with another Liverpool studio, and that I've been working in another studio too.  There is no truth to any of this.

Mine was the first tattoo studio in Liverpool city centre, back in 1993.  Now that is true.

Some People...

Once in a while an idiot comes into the studio.  I've heard it all before, but there's always one who thinks they've come up with something new.

On Saturday, a couple walked in.  She didn't like her tattoo.  It was eight years old and she'd gone off it.  She wanted a new free one.  He pretended to be a policeman.  Well I've heard that one before too, so I asked to see his ID card.  He didn't have it with him.  What a surprise.

These two actually thought they'd get a free tattoo cover-up eight years later!  Quick check to make sure this is still Planet Earth, same dimension etc.

Imagine trying to take a dress back to a shop eight years later...

See that rectangular space in the wall?  Door, go, now.

Like I said.  Idiots.

If it's 3pm or later, especially on a Saturday when the studio's crowded already, there's slim chance of getting tattooed that day.  I'm one man, with one pair of hands.

I want you to be proud of the tattoo you've chosen.  So don't ask me to rush through someone else's design.  You wouldn't want me to rush yours.

Congratulations to Dave M for becoming a grandad.

I've begun Al's new tattoo, a chest piece - a samurai mask with a difference, as he's into Predator.  I've only the outline done so far.  Photos will be posted once the entire piece is finished, which depends on when Al can get into the studio.  I know I'm going to enjoy working on this one.

I'd hoped to get the garden mowed this Sunday but it rained.  Spent the afternoon making up needles for the studio instead.  One of the 'delights' of being self-employed is that you're never really off work.  Still, I wouldn't change it.

Little Richard blasting out this morning - and now I'm off to work again.

The studio has two music licenses, one from PRS, the other from PPL, to be renewed annually.

PPL = for use of recorded music on behalf of the record companies and the performer’s rights.

PRS = the use of the lyrics and composed music in any public performance of music, on behalf of the song writers, composers and publishers.

So how do these companies know which bands or artists to send the royalities to?  They don't ask me which music has been played in the studio.

And I've had many, many professional musicians in the studio who say they've never received any royalties from either company.

This Week's Idiot Award Goes To...

A woman phoned my tattoo studio and demanded I stay open till she could get there at 7pm.

She's not a regular client, or even a previous client.

Did I agree?  No way.  For all I knew she might not have shown up after me waiting, and being very late for my evening meal.

She didn't even say please.
